RealPlayer software makes it easy for you to view streaming video and listen to audio presentations of any length. Until this technology came along, it was impossible for users to hear a sound file without first downloading it to his computer. This took a great deal of time -- it usually took much longer to download the file than to listen to it -- and made it impossible to send more than a few seconds of audio over the net.

With RealPlayer, however, the user has to download only a tiny amount of data to play a sound file that can be hours long. Entire radio programs are now distributed this way, and it's even possible to broadcast "live" RealAudio programs, with only a few seconds of delay.
